VCMC

Team Profile:

Team VCMC is an extension of the British Columbia-based VCMC autocross club. Boasting over 200 members, VCMC is one of the largest and best organized clubs in the country and has produced over 50 National Class championships across Canada and the United States.

Team VCMC leader, Richard Basford is one of those champions. He brings an impressive driving resume to the competition, including the 2003 Canadian Nationals C-Stock Champion, 2003 Rookie of the Year and 2011 VCMC Competitor of the Year.

The team’s philosophy is that the driver is the main ingredient for success, regardless of what modifications are made to the car. As Richard says: “if you aren’t able to make use of the full potential of a car off the showroom floor, then how can you expect to master a highly modified purpose-built racing machine?”

VCMC arrived in Kelowna BC for the Knox Mountain Hill Climb with high expectations. Drivers Sead Causevic and Richard Basford showed up with the VCMC FR-S, keen for some track time in preparation for the notorious Pikes Peak Hill Climb race set to take place at the end of June. Hill climb events are hard to come by and this race was the only occasion to practice as well as tweak and tune the car and the drivers before the big event.

“We’ve been granted permission to use the car outside of the Tuner Challenge, so we’ll definitely make the most of it!” says Team VCMC’s Richard Basford. Indeed, the BC-based team has participated in an astonishing amount of extracurricular events with their FR-S since the beginning of the challenge. Even though VCMC have their roots in the western Canadian autocross scene, they’ve managed to attend and participate in a wide variety of motor sports, from simple meets and automotive enthusiast gatherings to sanctioned events.

Just like Top Tuner’s Sasha Anis, Richard Basford is a ‘grip racer’ at heart. Let’s face it, comparing autocross to drifting is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. But, both of them being motorsports and requiring skills and driving abilities, Basford was definitely up to the challenge. Preparation wasn’t very complicated: the guys at VCMC installed a large Whiteline sway bar to make the rear end stiffer, put the stock FR-S tires in the rear and removed the parking brake button to help with initiation.

Team VCMC broke the ice at Mecaglisse, in terms of drastic power upgrades for the Scion Tuner Challenge, by turbocharging their FR-S. We have a feeling that competitors will be looking into these performance solutions as well. VCMC needed to build a powerful yet reliable setup that would perform consistently throughout the remainder of the challenges. For this, the Vancouver team turned to Full Blown Motorsport of Apple Valley MN to find a better solution. FBM is a full race fabrication shop that manufactures and sells high performance fuel systems as well as custom turbo setups.
